How to Babyproof a Small Apartment

Babyproofing a small apartment has one advantage: there is less ground to cover. But tight spaces also mean your baby is closer to more things, so a careful pass through each area pays off once they start moving.

Begin at floor level by getting down on your hands and knees. From that height you will spot cords, outlets, small objects, and sharp corners that are invisible standing up. In a compact space, furniture and hazards sit close together, so this low view is essential.

Anchor tall and unstable furniture to the wall. Bookcases, dressers, and shelving can tip if a pulling toddler uses them to stand. Anti tip straps are inexpensive and quick to install, and they matter even more when furniture is packed close and climbable.

Cover outlets and manage cords. Use outlet covers on every reachable socket, and bundle or hide the cords from lamps, chargers, and electronics. In a studio, cords often run along the same low walls where your baby plays, so tuck them behind furniture or use cord channels.

Secure the kitchen and bathroom, which are usually small and easy for a baby to reach into. Add cabinet latches on anything holding cleaners, medicine, or breakables. Keep hot drinks and cooking pot handles turned away from edges, since counters are close to the living area in an open plan.

Watch the zones where rooms overlap. In a studio, the sleep, play, and cooking areas blur together, so a baby gate or a movable barrier can create a safe boundary during cooking or busy moments. Choose a gate that folds or removes easily so it does not block your daily path.

Keep the crib area bare. No pillows, bumpers, or loose blankets, and make sure the crib sits away from cords, curtains, and shelves the baby could grab.

Do a fresh sweep every couple of months. Your baby's reach and skills change quickly, and a hazard that was safe last month may be within grasp now. Small spaces are quick to recheck, so make it a routine.
