How to Prevent Mould on Bath Toys and Baby Gear
Small bathrooms without windows stay humid for hours after bath time, and a lot of baby gear holds water in places you cannot see. Squeeze toys, foldable tubs, bath kneelers and bottle parts can develop mould if they never dry completely. A simple drying routine, easier-to-clean items and lower humidity prevent most of it.
Why baby gear gets mouldy
Mould needs moisture, warmth and something to feed on, and a small bathroom after bath time provides all three. Water trapped inside squeeze toys, in the hinges of foldable tubs and in the seams of bath kneelers stays damp far longer than the surfaces you can see.
Soap and bath product residue gives mould a food source, and bathrooms without a window or strong extractor fan keep humidity high for hours. When towels dry in the same room and baby items are stored damp in a closed basket, conditions stay ideal for growth.
Dry everything completely
After each bath, squeeze as much water as possible out of toys, rinse soap from tubs and kneelers and stand everything where air can reach all sides. A mesh bath toy organizer that hangs and drains is much better than a closed bucket or bin.
Run the extractor fan or leave the door open for at least 20-30 minutes after bathing. If the bathroom stays steamy, move toys and the folded tub to a drier room to finish drying rather than leaving them in humid air overnight.
Choose gear that is easy to clean
Bath toys without holes, or toys that open up or come apart so you can wash and dry the inside, are far less likely to grow hidden mould than classic squeeze toys. Solid rubber or silicone toys are easy to wipe and dry.
Replace squeeze toys that show dark specks when you squeeze water out or that smell musty, since the inside cannot be cleaned reliably. For foldable tubs, look for designs where hinges and drain plugs are easy to reach with a brush.
Clean on a routine
Wash bath toys, tubs and kneeler pads weekly in hot soapy water, scrubbing seams and drain areas with a small brush, then rinse thoroughly and dry completely. Check manufacturer instructions before using any disinfecting solution on items babies put in their mouths.
Bottle and breast pump parts need the same attention. Clean them after each use, then air dry fully on a clean rack before storing. Stacking parts or closing them in containers while still damp is a common cause of mould inside valves and nipples.
Lower bathroom humidity
Reducing overall humidity protects both baby gear and the bathroom itself. A small dehumidifier can make a noticeable difference in a windowless bathroom, and wiping down tub edges and tiles with a towel after bathing removes a lot of standing water.
Hang wet towels to dry outside the bathroom where possible, keep the door open when the bathroom is not in use and report a broken extractor fan to your landlord. Persistent black mould on walls or ceilings is a building issue rather than a cleaning problem.
