Hook-on high chair

A hook-on high chair is a fabric or molded seat that clamps directly to the edge of a table, using the table itself as its support instead of standing on the floor on its own legs. This makes it a popular choice for small kitchens and dining nooks where a full-size high chair simply will not fit alongside a table and chairs.

Because it folds flat or into a small bag, a hook-on chair is also easy to bring along when visiting family or eating out, which a bulky floor-standing high chair is not. The chair relies entirely on the table's edge and structure to hold the baby's weight securely, so not every table is a suitable match.

Before buying, check that your table edge and apron, the support piece running under the tabletop, meet the width and clearance the manufacturer lists, since glass tables, pedestal tables and tables with a wide apron often will not work. Check the weight limit and make sure the clamping mechanism locks securely with no wobble. A common mistake is using a hook-on chair on a table that is too light or unstable to safely anchor it, or skipping the clearance check under the tabletop where the clamp needs room to seat properly.
