Changing pad

A changing pad is a cushioned, wipeable surface used for diaper changes, typically with a slight curve or raised edges to help keep a baby from rolling off. Fixed pads sit on top of a dresser or a wall-mounted changing table, while portable changing pads fold flat for a diaper bag or travel.

In a small apartment, many parents skip a dedicated changing table altogether and instead put a changing pad on top of a dresser they already own, or mount a fold-down pad to the wall to free up floor space entirely. A portable pad then covers changes away from home, on a car trip, or at a relative's house.

When choosing a pad, check the strap system, since a pad with a secure waist strap is safer to use on any elevated surface than one without. Measure the pad against the dresser or wall-mounted table you plan to use it on, since pads vary in size and not every pad fits every surface cleanly. A common mistake is placing a changing pad on a surface without ever using the strap, or turning away from a baby on an elevated pad even briefly, since babies can roll and reach the edge quickly once they are mobile.
