Bedside sleeper
A bassinet that attaches or sits flush against a parent's bed so the baby stays within reach on a separate surface.
A bedside sleeper is a style of bassinet built to sit directly against the side of an adult bed, often with one side that lowers or opens toward the parent. The idea is to keep a newborn within arm's reach overnight while still giving the baby their own firm, separate sleep surface, rather than sharing the adult mattress.
This setup is popular in small apartments where there is no separate nursery, since it removes the need for a second piece of furniture with its own floor footprint. Bedside sleepers typically attach to the bed frame with straps or a bracket system, and most are rated only for younger infants before they start rolling or pushing up, similar to a standalone bassinet.
When shopping, check how the sleeper attaches to your specific bed height and frame style, since not every model fits every bed. Confirm the mattress is firm and fits the frame snugly with no gaps at the sides. A common mistake is treating the attachment straps as optional or leaving the sleeper unsecured, which defeats the purpose of a separate, stable sleep surface next to the bed.
