Outlet cover

An outlet cover blocks access to an unused electrical outlet, either with a simple plug insert that pops into the socket or a sliding plate cover that sits over the whole outlet and only opens when a plug is pushed in and turned. Both styles aim to keep curious fingers and small objects out of the socket.

This is one of the simplest and least expensive babyproofing steps in any home, small or large, and it is usually one of the first things parents add once a baby starts crawling and reaching toward low outlets around the apartment. Sliding plate covers tend to be more convenient for outlets in regular use, since they do not need to be removed and reinserted every time.

When choosing covers, check how many outlets in your space are actually within a baby's reach, since not every outlet needs one, particularly ones behind heavy furniture. Pick sliding plate covers for outlets you use often and simple plug inserts for ones that stay empty most of the time. A common mistake is buying only plug-style inserts for outlets used daily, which parents then stop replacing after a few uses, leaving the outlet effectively uncovered.
