Umbrella stroller

An umbrella stroller is a lightweight, simplified stroller named for the way its frame folds down into a long, narrow shape similar to a closed umbrella, often with a strap or hook to keep it folded. It is built for portability rather than the extra storage baskets, recline positions and car seat compatibility of a full-size travel system stroller.

In a small apartment, the folded shape matters as much as the weight, since a narrow folded stroller can lean in a closet corner, slide behind a door, or fit in a smaller car trunk where a full-size stroller frame would not. Most umbrella strollers work best for babies who can sit up well on their own, generally starting somewhere in the six-month range depending on the model, rather than for newborns.

When shopping, check the recline options if you plan to use it with a younger baby, since some umbrella strollers only offer an upright seat position. Check the folded dimensions against your actual storage spot, not just the stroller's overall weight. A common mistake is buying the lightest, cheapest umbrella stroller for a newborn who needs a fuller recline and more support than a basic umbrella frame provides.
